Behind The Scene - Lily Alcaraz and Léa Berlier talk to us about the Évasion fresco

Lily Alcaraz and Léa Berlier are textile designers specializing in the creation of exceptional materials. In their workshop, they create unique pieces entirely handwoven on their looms. Their approach is based on research and experimentation, which allows them to develop a unique visual language. Thanks to their mastery of weaving, they recompose painted patterns and cut materials to create unique creations.

They have collaborated on numerous projects with Maison Martin Morel, including the Évasion fresco, which they have just completed.

We spoke with them to find out more about the design of this new work.

  • What inspired the creation of this fresco and why did you choose a dreamlike landscape?

For this fresco, we wanted to create a landscape where Maison Martin Morel's iconic motifs would outline the main shapes. Motifs from the archives punctuate the mountains, define the hills, and structure the entire landscape. We incorporated unexpected details to immerse the viewer in a dreamlike atmosphere, inviting the imagination. The goal was to tell a story through this monumental setting, and to offer, thanks to the grandeur of the fresco, the impression of being able to walk through it.

  • Can you describe your creative process, from initial idea to final execution?

Starting with the idea of a landscape, we began by exploring the house's archives. We selected floral and all-over patterns inspired by nature and abundance. Next, we laid out the key elements of the decor by tracing the main shapes, such as mountains, to structure the composition. We then rearranged and redrew the archival patterns so they harmoniously punctuated the scene. Graphic work complemented the design to add hand-drawn touches. Balance in the composition is essential to ensure visual coherence. Finally, the color choices allow for varying the atmosphere, sometimes transforming a single design into several distinct universes.

  • What is the nature of your relationship with Maison Martin Morel, and how has this collaboration influenced this project?

We have been part of the Maison Martin Morel adventure since its beginnings, and have worked on numerous motifs inherited from this family home, as well as on several frescoes. This extensive experience with the archives allows us to select the most relevant motifs and build universes while remaining faithful to the spirit of the brand. We do not hesitate to revisit old motifs, to redesign them to give them a contemporary touch, which facilitates their integration into our frescoes. Colors also play a key role in adapting the motifs, sometimes giving them a more modern, even surreal, character.
